Open House for Parents of teenagers

Sunday May 13, 2007
At India Center  - 2:30 pm
Please RSVP by
May 11th (send email to indianyouthgroup@yahoo.com)

The IYG is organizing an OPEN HOUSE for  parents of teenagers who are interested in the IYG.  In this session you will get an opportunity to ask questions and clarify your perception about the IYG and what we do.  The IYG Executive Committee along with their Advisor, Mr Shri Garg, will be there to answer any questions.

The IYG is a platform that was created by ISW for youths to gain experience in Leadership, Project Management, Community Service and to learn how to be a responsible citizen.  It provides youths with motivation and confidence.   Come talk to some of the youths who have learnt a lot by participating in IYG.

The Indian Youth Group is exactly what the name is, a youth group for Indian teens (12-18) and is led by an adult Advisor.

IYG was founded by Carloyn Passey in 1991 with a motive to bring students together to make them aware of their importance in the community.  This was achieved by doing several community services during the year.  Students used to conduct their monthly meetings to plan their activities.  To make sure everything is done properly student start electing an Executive Committee consisting of President, Secretary and Treasurer.  During the whole year students performed several community service program and few fun programs to keep them together.  The end result was that student found a place where they find fun and could feel proud of their services to the community.

In recent years IYG realized that it can do much more than just being a service organization.  Along with providing the community services, emphasis was given on learning.  Students were given chance to learn management, leadership, team building, and above all, confidence.  For this purpose we did not reduce our community service programs, rather increased them.    Our monthly meetings are meant for planning where all students are encouraged to speak and suggest their views.  Initially, they are shy but after few meeting their confidence builds up.  For each program, we elect a chairperson who plans the activity, build a team of people and finish the task in a managed way.  Each task is taken as a project and completed professionally in such a way that it leaves an impression.  There are times when team leaders do the presentations of their task.  All of this leads to the learning we set the agenda for.

Some of the activities that are performed every year are:

Bishop Dinner during Thanksgiving,
Refugee Apostolate help, and
Christmas caroling, during Christmas time
Humrahi Valentine during Valentine
Showcase India in April
Walk-for-Hunger in May
Games in ISW picnic in July
Children’s room in India Day in August
Walk to cure Cancer in September

Not only do we do charity work and fundraising, we also have fun. We go on trips every summer to various places, such as Six Flags or Hampton Beach.  At times, we have movie nights, DJ nights, or bowling nights

For any general questions, send an email to indianyouthgroup@gmail.com

To learn more about IYG you should attend a Parent seminar that is hosted quarterly.  The attendance in one of this seminar for parents is mandatory to get the membership in IYG for their kids.
