Diwali Cultural Program and Mela_Oct 27th 2007
On October 27th
2007, ISW celebrated Diwali with first of its two events planned for this
year. First event, the Cultural Program and Mela was organized at the
Marlborough Middle School. The public response was overwhelming. The
cultural program was captivating and kept on going with enticing music and
well choreographed dances performed by the local talent.
The stage and the entire
venue were beautifully decorated with a Diwali theme. The ambience was
tasteful. It went a long way in bringing the nostalgic memories of Diwali
celebrations back home.
The Mela consisted of
stalls for Jewelry, Clothing, Beauty treatments, mehndi, and Diwali
accessories and snacks. Dinner was available from food court which Again
was very tastefully decorated and successfully created a festive ambiance.
And of course, there was also a Mithai Shop which replicated one of the
typical “Mithai Ki Dukans” that spring up all over the town, back home at
Diwali time. After all, what is a Diwali without lots of sweets and Mela.
Meera
Gupta, president of The India Society of Worcester, acknowledged and
appreciated the contributions made by some of the local physicians for
volunteering their professional services for our “Health Stop”. She also
appreciated the volunteer Teachers of our Cultural School who donate their
time in rain or shine or snow, to help our children become familiar with our
roots. Mrs. Gupta further expressed her gratitude and appreciation for
additional countless volunteers, who worked at this event and also
contribute to the success of so many other ISW events throughout the year.
Mrs. Gupta also presented
two recognition awards on behalf of ISW. Every year ISW recognizes some
members of the community who have done outstanding service for the community
members.
One of the recognition
awards was presented to Mrs. Usha Verma Who, as the Chairperson of the
Crisis Committee, has been a true “Friend in Need” to so many people for a
long long time. Mrs. Verma also teaches in our cultural School and also
performs poojas, when needed, at our religious events.
The other recognition
award was presented to Mr. and Mrs. Hemant and Neeta Shah for their
dedication and constant involvement with community affairs. The recognition
was also to acknowledge the tireless efforts of Mr. Hemant Shah in creating
and managing ISW’s new website.
The second of the two ISW
events to celebrate Diwali this year, will take place on Nov. 3, 2007 at the
India Center. We will perform a Family Diwali Pooja and Pot Luck Dinner
that day. This event is open to the ISW members only.
