After a nice long summer break, it’s back to school time in August. As parents and kids get back to homework and school sports, planning for college might be far from everyone’s mind. Yet with rising college fees, increasing national and international competition to get into the best schools, the need to prepare for college has never been more urgent. A College Board study identified that the public 4 year tuition and fees increased by 35 percent in inflation-adjusted terms between 2001 and 2006, the highest in the past 30 years. The Education Department predicts that the rise in the number of high-school seniors will continue until at least 2013. Schools are reporting application increases of over 50 percent over past years. What are the best strategies to help you and your kids navigate through this changing educational landscape? How does one stand out from the flood of applicants? What are the financial resources available to assist you? Come hear from a panel of counselors and consultants on the topic of Planning for College. Hear first hand from College admissions officers what they look in an application. Panelists:

Lia Kim, Assistant Director of Admissions, Coordinator of Cultural Diversity Initiatives, Clark University Hometown: Queens, NY Shortly after graduating from Union College in 2006 with a B.A. in English Literature and minor in political science I wanted to explore the world of higher education. When the opportunity presented itself, I joined the admissions staff at Clark University in Worcester, Massachusetts in August 2006. My main responsibility is to assist with recruitment of cultural diversity. I also oversee a group of Clark student diarists to channel a Clarkie's experience to the world and coordinate an on-campus Presidential scholarship day. In the coming years, I anticipate that prospective students will take advantage of an adventurous college application experience by discovering intellectual curiosity for the process and in turn finding a school that fits their academic and social prowess.
