On a beautiful Fall Afternoon, over one hundred members of the ISW community gathered in the community hall on Saturday, October 24 for a much-awaited Humarahee meet focused on learning, information sharing and festivities.
The event kicked off with an informative talk on diabetes management by Dr. Nitin Trivedi, a well-regarded endocrinologist at St. Vincent’s Hospital. Following the medical session, Mr. Vikram Udeshi delivered a presentation guiding attendees through the critical Medicare 2027 healthcare updates. The gathering concluded with an energetic, festive Garba and Dandiya dance that brought everyone to their feet.
In his talk, Dr. Trivedi began by establishing the fascinating historical context of diabetes, noting that it was referred to as madhumeh in Indian classical literature and diabetes mellitus in ancient Greek texts. He then moved into practical medical guidance, breaking down the key differences between Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes, alongside the crucial roles that BMI, cholesterol, and high blood pressure play in managing the condition.
Dr. Trivedi explained the medical reasoning behind why a BMI of 23—rather than the standard 25—should be considered the borderline threshold for South Asians, making a strong case for earlier lifestyle adjustments and dietary awareness within our community. He presented a chart and an easy-to-use app that can help in measuring calories and glycemic index of various foods.
About 40 Blood Pressure monitors and Glucometer devices were distributed to the attendees procured by Dr Sahdev Passey and Mr. Ashish Chowlagi.
The atmosphere shifted from clinical to financial when Mr. Vikram Udeshi, a Medicare specialist presented Medicare 2027 healthcare updates, focusing heavily on the newly implemented out-of-pocket spending caps, shifts in prescription drug plan tiers, and updated coverage structures for chronic care management.
This was followed by a vote of thanks by ISW President, Mr. Jagan Srinivasan for the generous donations by the ISW Humrahee group to help the victims of Nepal floods. This was an important outreach charity activity led by Mr. Sharat Amin and Dr Kirti Nagpal.
The afternoon concluded with an energetic Garba and Dandiya by folks dressed in ethnic wear dancing to traditional tunes recorded by Mr. Suresh Patel.
It was a very successful Humrahee meet focused on learning, having fun and charity – the three pillars that brings together a community in a meaningful way.
